Grilling Season Safety Tips

Hello Everyone!
It’s Jacob, Digital Marketing Support Coordinator, and I wanted to write this blog about the importance of fire safety during these warm summer months. Growing up, I developed this passion for food, and when I was old enough, I would grill dinner for my family. I will never forget my mom opening the door and saying, “Jacob John Michael Daniel Stallman stop making that flame so tall.”
It wasn’t until I started working here at SERVPRO of Ottumwa & Grinnell that I understood the dangers of letting the fire grow. On average, 1,300 house fires a year are created from charcoal or other solid-fueled grills. Follow these tips, and you will ensure that your property doesn’t fall victim to fire damage.
- Place grill outside and on a flat surface. This will prevent the likelihood of the grill tipping over, causing a bigger problem than an overcooked steak.
- Do not leave the grill unattended.
- Wear appropriate clothing to ensure there isn’t a chance for it to get in the blaze.
- Finally, you will want to clean the grill BEFORE and AFTER every use. This is to prevent the fire from burning the burnt remains on the rack.
